Sun Life Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships 2019

More than 200 teams paddling for thrills and glory to celebrate Dragon Boat Festival

Exhibition on environmental protection

[Hong Kong, May 22, 2019] For the 12th year running, Sun Life Hong Kong Limited (“Sun Life”) returns as title sponsor of the Sun Life Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships, which will take place on June 7, 2019, the day of the Dragon Boat Festival (Tuen Ng Festival), at Stanley Main Beach. The event is expected to feature over 200 teams with more than 5,000 paddlers from Hong Kong and overseas this year. Winning work from International STEMathon 2019 – during which students were challenged to create STEM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) solutions for ocean protection – will be displayed at the event to promote the importance of environmental protection.

Title-sponsored by Sun Life and organized by SCMP’s Young Post, International STEMathon 2019 was held in the Hong Kong Science Park in late March earlier this year. In this 30-hour hackathon-style challenge, more than 130 students from Hong Kong and Asia competed against each other for the most viable and innovative proposal to tackle threats to the oceans.

“This year, in line with our mission to build a sustainable and healthy community, we want to raise public awareness of environmental protection, in addition to bringing fun and celebrating the festival with paddlers and spectators. While green facilities will be available at the venue, we also want to further promote going green by showing the young generation's creativity regarding tackling threats to the oceans,” said Belinda Au, General Manager of Distribution and Marketing at Sun Life Hong Kong Limited.

There will be free water refill stations and recycle bins for plastic bottles and aluminium cans on the event day.

A social media game about ocean protection will also be launched on Sun Life Hong Kong Limited’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/sunlifeHK). In addition, netizens will be invited to contribute ideas to create innovative green dragon boat concepts, the best of which can then be selected through online voting, with Sun Life donating HKD5 for each casting vote to a green organization1.

As an extra treat at the event, free ice-cream will be available on Sun Life Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships 2019 at a designated location in Stanley, on a first-come first-served basis, simply by following Sun Life’s Facebook page or Instagram or WeChat account2. Spectators are also invited to take selfies on the event day and upload to Instagram with the hashtag #sunlifedragonboat2019 for the chance of winning a travel voucher worth HKD2,000 3.
